Sabres Deadline Day Recap

2024-06-15

The Buffalo Sabres, who are not typically very active on the trade front, decided to have an active deadline this year. The Sabres made a total of 5 trades on the EHE’s deadline day, 2 of which significantly impact the pro roster.

BUF RECEIVES: D Justin Holl

LAK RECEIVES: D Joel Edmundson + BUF 2024 3rd Round Pick

GM Comments: This was a deal that came to happen very quickly. We saw Holl was on the block and decided to get an offer in to try and bring him in. Not only did we like how defensively solid he is but he also has another year left on his deal. With how rentals were getting shopped around we liked this price to stabilize our blueline and be able to keep him for more than just a couple of months.

BUF RECEIVES: D Jakob Chychrun

NYR RECEIVES: D Vladislav Kolyachonok + BUF 2025 1st Round Pick

GM Comments: Another deal that worked itself out very quickly. Martin reached out about potentially making Chychrun available. Once again we liked his contract and being an RFA at the end of this year allowed us to have a lot of control over how long he can be a Sabre. This was not something we were expecting to do, but it’s something we loved. Chychrun brings a great balance of skating, puck moving, offense and a good amount of defense to really round out the team. Kolyachonok was someone we had high hopes for, but with our current window we figured Chychrun could give us a lot more now and in the next few years. We wish him the best of luck.

BUF RECEIVES: F Luke Henman + F Patrick Khodorenko + $1,950,000

BUF TRADES: D Kevin Gravel + F Jean-Sebastien Dea + F Cole Bardreau

GM Comments: This was 3 separate trades, however we lumped them in together as the goal for all of them was simple. We knew the Americans were likely not going to make the playoffs, so what we decided to do was try to get as much cash as possible for players that likely wouldn’t be back next season. We could always use more cash in the team and we hope that these players get put in better situations to win.

A more active Sabres team went out and accomplished what they had hoped for and that was to improve the blue line. Offense has always been where the Sabres excel, now it’s a question of whether these moves can help them make a deep playoff run and ultimately achieve what has alluded them in the past couple of years: A Stanley Cup victory.
