Day one of draft finishes busy time for Coyotes

2017-08-06

The wind of change is blowing through Arizona this week.

Leading up to draft day, the club began talks with several teams regarding players on their roster. The first hammer to drop was unproductive so far Ryan Strome and hopefully a flash in the pan, Connor Sheary, were shipped to Boston. In return, they received potentional FP targer, Claude Giroux. They also receive prospect Matthew Phillips and a 4 rounder.

The fact that the EHE's Arizona Coyotes' headquarters are 40 minutes outsidePhiladelpha's Wells Fargo Center, the team was happy to get a real life Flyers. The team gave up some youthful players but that will be addressed later.

Sensing the team wasnt going anywhere and it was going start a youth movement witih Giroux, along with Logan Couture, as the veteran leaders, , Arizona shipped Dman Jake Muzzin and two late picks for a body in Justin Holl and a late 2nd and early 3 pick.

In a swap of goalies on a one year left on their deals, the team swapped Henrik Lundqvist for Ben Bishop. Bishop is slightly cheaper with similar ratings, so team felt helping out that Ranger ownership and letting him play there for a year was a OK.

Then even a bigger deal was made 2 days before the draft. Arizona gave up 25 year old Jaden Schwartz, prospect Ville Husso, a 3rd and a 5th. The return was a potential young guy in Nikolay Goldobin from Boston, along with the #7 pick in the draft as well as number 32 in the draft.

Then we get to draft day. Earlier in the summer, the team won the EHE draft Lottery and did not hide the fact they were taking Nolan Patrick at number one (that Flyers thing again). The team didn't want long to announce their pick and Patrick is now in Arizona.

With the 7th pick, the club dropped down to 16 and picked up the #35. At 16, Arizona selected Czech Martin Necas. Some thought his slipping to 16 was a surprise.

Sitting with their next pick at 30, the Coyotes again hit the PMs and made a move. This time moving up to 18 and giving up the 50. At number 18, Arizona called upon Kailer Yamamoto

Second round saw more trade and more picks. Coming to Arizona is Isaac Ratcliffe (Flyers again), Jaret Anderson-Dolan and Antonie Morand. The last pick of round 3 (due to the Philadephia pick moving down 15 spots), the club took a goalie in Matt Vilalta.

The team also trade two picks to get players for the roster. a 3rd pick was sent to Carolina for juinor stud Francis Perron and Rinat Vailev.

The last trade raised some eyebrows. The Coyotes acquired former first round pick, 22 year old Hunter Shinkaruk from the Calgary Flames.

The team was very busy with all the picks they had today. And want to apologize to other GMs if I wasn't getting back to their messages timely as it was getting crazy with all the league trades and keeping up with who was picked and whose turn it was.

Arizona has two picks remaining in the 6th round.
