Jordie Benn returns to Pittsburgh, Reunites with Brother Jamie, and Leaves After One Game

2021-05-10

PITTSBURGH - Everything seemed very hunky dory when Jordie Benn, who played 59 games with the Penguins back in 2016-2017, returned to the organization in a trade that saw Alexander Edler, Mark Pysyk, and Riley Nash sent off to the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for Benn, Andrej Sekera, Valtteri Filppula, a 2021 2nd, and a 2021 7th.

It however, was not very hunky dory at all.

"I can't f***ing stand that guy." said Jordie after he was reacquired by the Penguins on May 7th. "The guy thinks he's the greatest thing ever, what with his evil villian goatee and consistent 85+ point seasons. Ugh."

The feeling from younger brother Jamie was less explosive, though still bitter.

"You know, ever since Thanksgiving last year, there's been a real feud brewing between the two of us. I accidentally hit him in the eye with my half of the wishbone, and he thinks I did it on purpose, which I did not. Since then he's had a real issue with me. But whatever. Jealously I guess. Not my fault I've quadrupled his NHL point totals."

Jamie Benn, who had three points (1G, 2A) in the lone game they played together this season, tried to be the bigger person, and it was to no avail.

"Yeah, I tried to get him in on the offense. Drop pass, back to the point in the zone, and he wasn't having it. I think one time he intentionally iced the puck so I wouldn't have a scoring chance."

The tenseness in the room wouldn't last long, as Jordie was shipped out two days later in exchange for a 2021 4th round pick.

Jordie: "I'm excited to go somewhere like Toronto, they have a deep team and look poised to storm ahead of the teams in front of them and I'm excited to be part of that. Jamie's the big man here in Pittsburgh, and it's a tough shadow to live in when you're the older brother."

The Penguins appear poised for another long summer, as they are all but out of the playoff race for the second year in a row, meanwhile their AHL counterparts are the opposite: They look to be going on a run. A long one at that."

"Obviously we want to be in the playoffs too, but it's nice to see those guys down there have an opportunity to win a championship. Both teams often hold events together, so we all know each other quite well. Great group of guys." said Jamie Benn.

Editor's noteBefore Jordie left for Toronto, he was seen sitting next to Jamie on Facetime with their mother. She clearly wanted to put an end to this feud. Hopefully the Benn boys can move past their issues.
