Charlotte again??

2024-07-17

Every year the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins have made the playoffs, which is in six of the ten years that make up the history of the EHE, there is one constant that has been an obstacle every year: the Charlotte Checkers.

The Checkers have become a consistent playoff opponent for the WBS Penguins. The two teams met in round 2 in 2020 and 2021, as well as round 1 in 2015, 2022, 2023, and 2024. The Penguins were victorious in 2020, 2021, and 2023, while the Checkers were victorious in 2015 and 2022.

This year’s matchup has proven to be another thriller, with the Checkers coming out to a 2-0 series lead, only for the pendulum to swing in the Baby Pens favor, as they now hold a 3-2 series lead and will try to move onto the third round. Goaltender Brandon Bussi has been the star for WBS, posting a .947 save percentage and a 1.60 goals against average in the series. For Charlotte, Andrew Poturalski has led the way with two goals and two assists in the five games played thus far.

Prior to the 2024 playoffs, the WBS Penguins held a playoff record of 14-11 against Charlotte, and scored 82 goals in the five previous series while allowing 90.

The Checkers victory over the Penguins in 2015 was on the road to a Calder Cup Championship, while the Penguins’ victories in 2020 and 2021 were on the road to back to back Calder Cup Final appearances.

Whatever the outcome, fans of the E-AHL are in for another thriller, as Charlotte and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton year after year play a truly entertaining brand of hockey. Game six of this series comes to you live this Thursday, 7/18, at 7pm pacific.

Max McCormick was supposed to be the final piece and it's felt like it's somehow spun the team backwards. May the home teams prevail!
