Hughes signs Offer Sheet with Blue Jackets

2023-12-28

In shock news from Broad Street the Philadelphia Flyers' Jack Hughes signed an offer sheet from Columbus Blur Jackets.

This was unexpected and likely has huge impacts from a team roster and cap management perspective with the rumoured offer sheet of $10.5m annual salary for 4 years with a $6m signing bonus. The compensation would entitle the Flyers to the Blue Jackets 3 first round picks across the 2024-2026 seasons as well the Blue Jackets 2024 2nd. That compensation would appear tempting considering the Blue Jackets history of mediocrity however losing a player of that calibre is not ideal.

We reached out to Flyers management for comment and we received the following confirmation ...

" The Flyers can confirm that in the early hours of the morning we received the news of a substantial offer sheet from the Blue Jackets which has been signed by Jack. This is obviously a huge move but quite a simple decision for our team. Jack will be in Orange and Black for life. We applaud at the audacity of the Blue Jackets attempt of relevance and appreciate they were well within their rights. However we've always planned for this scenario so it was an easy decision and we move on to next season firmly with the Stanley Cup in mind and Jack leading that charge."

48 points in 148 career games and he gets a $48 million contract?? That's like if I gave $3 million to a goalie with four career EHE starts......
