Et un autre derriere la cravate 2023-08-23 Although it surely wasn't the big prize Patrice Bergeron was hoping to capture in his final EHE season, the legendary centerman nevertheless added one last accolade to his prestigious resume on Monday, winning the 2022-23 Frank J. Selke Trophy. With 11 first-place votes from 27 ballots, Bergeron beat out Elias Lindholm (Dallas Stars), Paul Stastny (Chicago), Ryan O'Reilly (Winnipeg Jets), and fellow New York Islander Mitch Marner to be crowned the league's top defensive forward. It was the second of back-to-back Selkes for the EHE's all-time leading scorer, and his third overall after also nabbing the award in 2017-18 as a member of the Edmonton Oilers. It was also just the second major award won by a member of the Islanders, alongside the "coveted" Lady Byng Trophy which went to defenseman Ryan Murray in 2020-21. With his retirement now finalized, Bergeron officially walks away from the league as the all-time leader in assists (475), points (809), and plus/minus (+322). In addition, the 53rd overall selection in the EHE Inaugural Draft finishes his career in the Top 10 for goals (335), powerplay goals (89), shorthanded goals (6), game-winning goals (63), and shots (3077). He also posted 83 points in 83 playoff games, and was selected to the EHE All-Star Game four times. "I wish I could play forever and never have to [retire], but eventually you have to move on," said Bergeron at a press conference just prior to EHE Awards Night. "The body tells you things sometimes...[the Islanders] knew at my exit meeting this was a possibility, but I didn't want to close the door completely. "The one thing I’ll definitely say is that I left it all out there. I have no regrets. I gave my all."
