The Faintest Glimpse of Light 2023-07-11 It was over 18 months ago that GM Doogan-Smith took over the Blackhawks. A team that had playoff aspirations at the start of the 2021-2022 season, did a 180 in the organization's five-year road map to become and began the journey to the bottom of the EHE standings as the new front office hoped to have a phoenix rise from the ashes. The team is now one step closer to this goal with the surprising win of the 2023 EHE draft lottery amd the presumptive pick for Connor Bedard. On the draw, the GM had this to say: Are we thrilled? Fuck ya we're thrilled! We toiled in no-man's land for the last three months of the season without any teams within six-points of us either side of fourth worst in the league. We had fully accepted that we were picking fourth or fifth this year. To see our name jump into the top two on the draw replay was some of the best news a SIM GM could ever ask for on a Monday morning. Not only do the Blackhawks have the first pick in this year's draft, but they also have Colorado's first round pick which turned into the 11th overall pick. Honestly, after the Tage Thompson trade all of our scoreboard watching revolved around what Colorado did the day before. Mad props to Kirk and how hard he hustled in the back-half of the season. It seemed like he turned over half his roster in an effort to surge into the playoffs. Had he done that, I would've been wearing some serious egg on my face for the Thompson trade, as the Avalanche are a bonafide playoff team for the 2023-2024 season. We're happy to retain the pick and fully expect the Avalanche to mop the floor with us every meeting next year. As the power house teams continue in their journey for Lord Stanley, the Blackhawks have been hitting game tape as they prep for the draft and how they are going to use the 13 picks they've obtained over the past 18 months. When GM Doogan-Smith took over the team, he had always had an eye for the 2023 draft to put his stamp on the team. The complete teardown has completed, it's now time to bear the fruit of the labours as the front office witness the faintest glimpse of light at the end of this very dark tunnel the organization has gone through.
