Canadiens Hire New GM

2023-01-27

The Montreal Canadiens held an introductory press conference today to introduce their new General Manager Matthew Rensby-Wills. Rensby-Wills or Willsy as he’s known as in hockey circles, is a veteran GM that brings experience of all sorts to the table. He’s done it all, contend, re-tool, and most importantly rebuild, something Habs fans know all too well.

“It’s no secret this franchise has struggled as of late, I’m here to fix that. It’s not going to happen overnight, but I am going to build this team back up brick by brick.” -Willsy

He's not wrong, the Habs have been in disarray for years now becoming a neglected bottom feeder that often trades away highly touted young talent. So, what is Willsy going to do to change that?

“We’ve assessed the situation our club is in and what we need to become a long-standing contender. We’re going to take our time and build this team through the draft; it won’t be quick but it’s a process that needs to happen. Now, to address some of these needs and build our prospect pool we may have to trade away some fan favourites, but we will be extremely cautious in doing so.” -Willsy

Since the hiring rumours have been swirling that star winger Jordan Kyrou could be on his way out, would trading a young stud winger be another mistake for the Habs long term?

“I’m not going to comment on any of these rumours. With that being said, other than our draft picks and a few select players, everything is on the table if it improves our team in the long run. The fans know, as well as I do, that we aren’t contending anytime soon. But the right move can steer us in that direction and maybe shorten that wait time by a year or two.” -Willsy

Even if that time is shortened by a year or two, it could be a long time before this team sees playoffs. They lack high end talent, depth, and an identity in general. Many fans blame head coach Dave Tippett who’s 2 seasons with the team have been nothing but a disappointment. Is he on the hot seat?

“I have nothing but respect for Dave. He’s a veteran coach but let’s be real here, he doesn’t have a lot to work with. I’m going to do my best to bring in players and make this team tough to play against but again it’s going to take time. Will Dave be here by the time this team is ready to make some noise? I can’t answer that right now.” -Willsy

One thing is for sure; changes are coming to the Montreal Canadiens, but will they be for the better? For the first time in a long time fans are cautiously optimistic, but one wrong move and they could turn on their newly appointed GM and be calling for his head.

This is Eric Engels of Sportsnet signing off.

For as mismanaged as the Habs have been, there are some good assets to work with (including an obscene bankroll). Looking forward to seeing what you can do over the long haul.
