Whirlwind Week 2022-01-28 It's been a whirlwind week for the New York Islanders, with General Manager Kyle Phillips completing eight trades involving 6 teams, 23 players, 9 draft picks, and 4 prospects. To keep it all straight, the following is a brief wrap-up of all the deals, along with comments from some of the parties involved, plus analysis from an anonymous EHE insider. To New York Islanders: Erik Karlsson, Jared McCann, Aaron Ness, VAN 5 2022 To Ottawa: Noah Dobson, Thomas Bordeleau, Topi Niemela, Sean Behrens, Josh Archibald, Mitch Reinke, NYI 4 2022 EHE Insider: “I really liked this deal for both teams. Sens looking at a retool (I imagine a quick one knowing Mr Bates) and Islanders push all in with two guys that will not only have an impact now but will re-rate nicely going into next season. Islanders gave up a lot of solid futures but their team is young with guys coming through so they should be able to manage those losses." To New York Islanders: Jake DeBrusk, Kim Nousiainen To New York Rangers: Kasperi Kapanen Islanders GM Kyle Phillips: "Kasperi is a guy we liked a lot, but at the same time felt he had plateaued a little. With Jake DeBrusk's upside, our need at left wing, plus getting a good prospect, we feel this a reasonable roll of the dice." EHE Insider: "This was a deal to fit a need. Kapanen is the better player right now but bringing DeBrusk in gives some flexibility on the left side which may give some balance to the Islanders. Right now it looks like a win for the Rangers, but long term this deal will really depend on whether DeBrusk gets a move away from Boston and scales the heights of his first few seasons or Nousiainen makes a mark on the NHL." To New York Islanders: Trevor Lewis, Kieffer Bellows, Christian Jaros, CGY 3 2022 To Calgary: Nikita Zadorov, Jacob Bernard-Docker, Parker Kelly, ANA 5 2022 Flames GM Stephen Gough: "The AHL guys have asked me to pass along their thanks for sending them home. They have only played 2 games and are still settling in but they are so excited to be a part of a team so so much youth to grow with. Zadorov says he feels like he is at home. He got off the plane saw the mountains and heard it can get real cold here." To New York Islanders: Austin Czarnik To Philadelphia: Chase Pearson, NYI 5 2023 Islanders GM Kyle Phillips: "Austin is a guy I've won with in the past, and I've seen him step up in big moments so I was happy to have a chance to bring him into the organization." Flyers GM Tommy Barr: "This trade was borne out of frustration with my AHL teams performance. From Calder Cup contender to down right awful. Changes had to be made and I was happy to take a 5th for one year of Czarnik." To New York Islanders: Carl Dahlstrom, Brett Ritchie, Tomas Jurco To San Jose; Nashville; Ottawa: NYI 5 2022, Carsen Twarynski, VAN 5 2022, Beck Malenstyn Islanders GM Kyle Phillips: "The goal is to have a farm team that can compete for the Calder Cup, and with these moves I think the Bridgeport Islanders, er, Sound Tigers should be in the upper echelon of the AHL." Predators GM Eric Wolf: "Jurco spent the majority of last season in the press box as a healthy scratch with Nashville, only to be sent down to the AHL at the start of this season. We felt Jurco, given where he’s at in his career, deserved an opportunity with another organization where he could potentially be afforded the chance to climb the depth charts." Bridgeport Stick Boy Garth Snow: "Pretty excited about these trades! It would be great to win something in my career." To New York Islanders: Sergei Bobrovsky To San Jose: David Rittich, NYI 1 2022, NYI 2 2022 Islanders GM Kyle Phillips: "In my mind, when you need to address a gaping hole in the lineup there's no sense in half-measures. Dave Rittich is a fine backup, but he's not a 1B goalie, and he's certainly not worth a $3.5 million cap hit. We could have gone down the road of trying to find a platoon partner for him, but to me that would have been a band-aid solution." EHE Insider: "When you view this in isolation it's a huge overpayment for Bob. However, the Islanders have both their Franchise Player tags available so there may be an option to do something long term which is an intriguing consideration as: 1) Bob's been great and due a nice re-rate; 2) What do you do with Klingberg or Hamilton then?! Tough decisions ... though none of it will matter in the end if Bob brings glory to the Isle." Stephen GoughLove it, well done sir. I think its a great idea to get insight from the other side of the deal as well as an insider.
