Trade Deadline Review

2021-06-06

The Detroit Red Wings approached the deadline knowing they wanted to make some minor trades and move out impending UFA's and get as many futures back in return.

GM Valle started early by shipping out Veterans Filppula and Benn to his close connections in Tampa for minor leaguers Murphy, Sieloff and picks in the 4th and 5th round of this upcoming draft.

The Wings also traded Honka to the Wild for minor leaguer Thomson and a 4th round pick. If anyone can get Honka to find his game it's the GM of the Wild with all their European players.

The final trade was sending Ennis to the Blues for Bourque and a 5th round pick. Bourque is still under contract for next season which meets expansion rules and gives them options for next season if not picked up.

There were huge rumors swirling around of Detroit and an unknown team almost striking a last-minute deal but both teams decided it would be best to review it in the offseason. Rumor was a top player going from the Wings to the unknown team for a top 6 player

and top prospect surprise

In the end, The Wings were able to shed roughly 8 and a half million and acquire 4 additional draft picks for this year's draft bringing their total to 14 draft picks in the upcoming draft.

The Wings enter the expansion draft in a prime position to not lose anyone of importance that can't be replaced within their system.
