Rangers acquire Hagg at the Deadline

2020-05-05

Everyone catch their breath yet?

What a crazy day for the Elite Hockey Experience. 17 deals in total were made on the deadline day.

If the Rangers hadn’t gone on a hot streak and pushed their way back into playoff contention, would team general manager Martin Auzins still have decided to keep all his UFA's to be? It’s hard to say.

But because of it - New York Rangers acquire Robert Hagg.

On the surface, Robert Hagg had a relatively successful season with the Detroit Red Wings last year. The Swedish defenseman netted 26 points (6 Goals, 20 Assists) in 82 games while registering 111 blocked shots and 214 hits. He was second in blocks and 3rd in hits on the team. To further that, he had 4 points in 21 Playoff contests and he was a part of a Stanley Cup winning team. That's exactly what New York Rangers wanted and got. He has already had all the experience in winning the cup and Rangers hope that he will bring all that to New York. This year it's a little different story for Hagg, who has only 12 points in 68 contests and minus -8 rating. By looking at the standings it's weird to see why Detroit would move one of their most relied upon defense man as they sit in 3rd place in their division and should make the playoffs.

Rangers GM commented on trade and the deadline:

"We had many discussions going on different scenarios but Hagg trade was the only one that come to action and we are happy to go with it. We were looking to get a depth defenseman and that's what we got. Robert will definitely come in and play for us, most likely on 3rd pair and penalty kill."
