Rangers 2020 Trio of Trades

2020-01-21

With the emergence of Alexandar Georgiev as a quality NHL goaltender for the New York Rangers, there was much speculation about his future. It’s not a new story.

What is Alexandar Georgiev’s role for the New York Rangers? Is he valuable trade bait that will bring the Rangers a huge return in a trade? These were the questions going around.

The Bulgarian was drafted very late in 2017 as a 7th round pick and a relative unknown who signed for the minimum. He cut his teeth in the AHL last year as a starter for Hartford. He got his break this year replacing a veteran goalie in Thomas Greiss who was traded to Arizona back in the summer. Georgiev has established himself as a good backup, but Lehner was a clear number 1 and the arrival of Darcy Kuemper has made it almost a sure thing that he will be traded.

New York Rangers trade Pavel Shen, Jon Gillies, Alec Regula, EDM 2020 2nd round pick and NYR 2020 2nd round pick to the Ottawa Senators for Darcy Kuemper, OTT 2020 4th round pick, OTT 2021 4th round pick and $1,500,000 in cash.

Auzins was qouted saying "We have a wonderful problem right now. We have too many good goalies."

Teams usually don’t stick with three goalies for that long. It simply doesn’t work because it’s so hard to find enough playing time for three goalies. Ergo, the Rangers might be looking to move someone. Trading Georgiev now would make a great deal of sense. His value is likely about as high as it’s going to be, though it’s remarkably hard to predict how goalies will do. That alone should motivate the Rangers to trade him sooner rather than later and look what happens next:

New York Rangers trade Alexandar Georgiev, Ilya Mikheyev and Miles Wood to the New Jersey Devils for San Durzi, Colton Point, CHI 2020 1st round pick, VAN 2020 2nd round pick, VAN 2020 3rd round pick and TB 2020 5th round pick.

Goalie problem solved - for now.

New York Rangers trade Jack Hughes, Alex Newhook, Jack Dugan, Zemgus Girgensons and Brett Kualk to the Colorado Avalanche for Jonn Tavares, Miles Wood and DAL 2020 5th round pick.

While thinking and working on the goalies, Rangers had something else cooking, something much larger. Nobody expected this. There wasn't a single rumor out there. Boom! John Tavares - A Ranger. Somewhere in parts unknown former Panthers GM Jeff Kuntz (Real life Islanders fan) probably had a heart attack. Most hated man in Islanders history becomes a straight rival. He is here, he is in Manhattan. Rangers was consider a team for playoffs with their current roster but nothing was clicking. Something had to be done. Nobody expeced a move of this caliber though. Rangers gave up a future superstar in Jack Hughes and that was no easy decision but you don't get a chance to get a player like Tavares, had to be done. And you all know all the "Only in New York" stories. One trully applies here. If someone can find a trade like this it really is the Rangers. Some might despise, some might cheer, some might hate it but at the end of the day Rangers just improved their hockey club and will look to get back on the win column when they host the Penguins tomorrow at the Madison Square Garden.

"The Colorado Avalanche would like to thank John Tavares for everything he has done for the franchise throughout the past nine seasons," Avalanche general manager Kirklan Lycar said in a statement. "John has achieved great individual success on the ice, as well as devoting a tremendous amount of his time and energy to the community. We wish him and his family all the best."

While the team is better, make no mistake about it, Rangers need to put it all together. All the star power they have, they need to get on board. Currently 24th in the standings, they simply must be better. Everyone knows that. It's starts today. No more excuses.

THIS IS THE WAY.

Best,

GM of the New York Rangers, Martin Auzins
