Devils Top Prospects Shine at 2020 WJC

The New Jersey Devils had a great showing at the 2020 World Junior Championship in Czech Republic. There were 4 prospects who represented their respective countries. All four are top prospects in the organization currently and they hope to see them all playing at the NHL level within the next few years.

Pavel Dorofeyev - Russia (Silver Medal)

Samuel Fagemo - Sweden (Bronze Medal)

Ville Heinola - Finland (4th Place)

Ty Smith - Canada (Gold Medal)

2020 World Junior Championship Summary

Pavel Dorofeyev 

Had a good showing at the WJC tournament. In 7 games he had 4 points, 3 goals and 1 assist, 16 SOG, +1. Pavel played on a great Russia team who had a tough end to their tournament in the gold medal game. 2 of his 3 goals game on the power play which is good. He had a hot start to the WJC scoring 3 goals in the first two games of the group stage but didn’t manage another one after that.

Samuel Fagemo 

Came out of the WJC with the best showing of the 4 prospects that went, if not of the whole tournament stats wise. Finishing with a stat line of 7 games, 13 points, 8 goals and 5 assists, 41 SOG, +3. It was great to see him score and score a lot in the WJC, he is touted for his shot and creativity and he put that on display during the tournament. On top of that he scored in every game Sweden played but one, most of the time opening up the game with a goal. Sweden were having a great tournament, topping their group and rolling over the Czech Republic in the 1st round but then lost a close on in OT to Russia in the semifinals. Then going on to beat Finland in the bronze medal game.

Ville Heinola

In a very up and down tournament for Finland at this years WJC, Ville Heinola was able to be a bright spot for them. Ville finished the tournament: 7 games, 5 points 5 assists, 11 SOG, and +1. Known for having a high hockey IQ, with incredible poise and great decision making at just 18, Ville Heinola showed why he was a 1st round pick in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft and 2019 EHE Entry Draft.

Ty Smith

Having a great year in the WHL as the captain of the Spokane Chiefs, 17 points, 4 goals and 13 assists in 21 games. Ty was able to build on that at the WJC as an alternate captain of Team Canada tallying 3 assists in 7 games with a +/- 0. Stats wise there’s not much there but you have to look at it with a grain of salt as he was on a very stacked Canada team. Being one of the Devils top prospects he played a very clean tournament and played well.

Overall all 4 of the prospects played well and showed why they were chosen to represent their countries. The Devils Organization is happy and proud to have them and can’t wait to see what they all develop into.
