Flames bolster defence with DeMelo

2019-12-31

After searching for a top 4 defenceman for the past few weeks today the Flames were able to complete a trade with new General Manager Ed Arsenault from the Ottawa Senators.

Pending League approval, heading to Ottawa is forward Nick Paul and a 2020 3rd and in return the Flames have received defenceman Dylan DeMelo.

We would like to thank Paul for his brief stay in Calgary however with a surplus of similar players in the system this allows the Flames to add a top 4 defenceman to the team for the rest of the season and possibly for the future as he is an RFA.

The move also allows the team to send Christian Jaros to the Stockton Heat for more ice time. In scouting the Sens we really liked how DeMelo was able to carrying himself and how determined he was to grow and lead. He has shown that he is can be a top 4 on any team with his performance in Ottawa.

This was a tough trade to make as Paul in his brief time here settled in well with the guys in Stockton, but more importantly as the Flames continue to rebuild giving up a 3rd rounder was tougher, however we felt it was necessary in order for the kids to get playing time in the AHL as well surround Makar and Dahlin with another skilled player.

For the time being the coach’s plan is to have DeMelo play on the second pairing with Chiarot but once Makar returns from injury he’ll slide in next to DeMelo on the 2nd pair, and Chiarot will move down to the 3rd pairing with Edmundson.

 Welcome to Calgary Demelo.
