Penguins Brouwer Waived for Purpose of Buyout

2019-01-21

PITTSBURGH - Penguins General Manager Ian Gurtowski announced today that the club has placed forward Troy Brouwer on waivers for the purpose of buying out his contract.

"It's never an easy decision to make, but ultimately this was something I felt needed to be done in order to help prepare our team for not only this year, but the future as well."

The 33 year old had 1 goal and 3 assists in 27 games played this season, and was clearly not getting the job done given what his contract demanded. The Penguins, who have been rumored to be in the market for a top 6 winger, will have nearly $7M in cap space once the buyout is officially completed. It's safe to assume that GM Gurtowski's attention will be pointed at filling that need.

"You're always trying to find ways to make your team better, and we cherish what Troy has done for our city and community." continuted Gurtowski "But at the end of the day we need results and it was clear to me that this partnership was no longer a fit."

Captain Jamie Benn also addressed the media

"Obviously, it hurts losing a guy like Troy, who was huge in our room. But we all love him and know what kind of guy he is, it's not going to be too difficult for him to get going again and help a team any way he can."

The Penguins (18-8-1) take on the Buffalo Sabres (11-11-5) in the second half of a home and home between the two teams, and look to take the split, after being defeated in Buffalo last game.
