Flames make yet another waiver claim 2018-12-31 What a surprise it was to see Ryan Reaves, a player the Calgary Flames had hoped would slip through free agency, be put on waivers by the Colorado Avalanche. After tonight’s game, Reaves first with the Flames, Reaves met with his dear friend Scott Oake after the game and shared that he had hoped that Calgary would pick him up. Calgary is a great city, great activities outside of the city to explore and the Flames have a bright future ahead of them according to Reaves and believes that Calgary is a great fit for him. GM Steve had this to say about Reaves. We are excited to have him on the team. His leadership, grit and character will rub off on the rest of the guys. As you were able to see several other teams were interested in getting him as well. He is guy that is under rated in my opinion and you know he’ll be there to answer the bell and stand up for his team. Reaves didn't disappoint in his first game with 17.18 minutes on the top line, giving out 4 hits, and getting an assist. Reaves waiver claim follows on the heels of GM Steve making a couple of moves earlier in December with the team struggling after a promising first couple of games. GM Steve needed to shake things up so the Calgary Flames acquired Shea Theodore, Anthony Duclair and Jakob Forsbacka-Karlsson in separate deals with the New York Rangers and the Pittsburgh Penguins. Pavel Zacha and a package of late picks was sent to the New York Rangers for Jakob Forsbacka-Karlsson, a 2nd round pick (EDM) and cash. In a separate deal the Flames sent Brandon Saad, Ludwig Bystrom and a 5th rounder to the Pittsburgh Penguins for Shea Theodore and Anthony Duclair. When GM Steve was hired he was clear about building a team from the back end out so with the addition of Theodore to the defensive core adds stability and gives the Flames a deeper defensive core for years to come with the additions of Dahlin and Makar in the next year or so. Next year the back end currently looks like: Faulk - Slavin Dahlin - Theodore Makar - Johnson Fighting for the bottom pairing spots and 7th dman are Chairot, Falk, Muller, Dotchin, Kulak, Morin.
