Casualty Of The Cap: Perreault Disgruntled After 2nd Trade 2018-11-11 The always-evolving salary cap world, sacrifices must be made in order to accommodate budget. Some might call them: Casualties of The Cap. Such was the role Veteran Forward Mathieu Perreault found himself playing. Not once, but twice, this off season. “Yea I mean, it’s a f%#@ing slap in the face, you know. But that’s the nature of the business side sometimes I guess.” In lieu of the cap fiasco created by the previous Stars GM; Perreault (with two more seasons remaining at an AAV of $7,500,000) was destined for departure in Dallas. Newly hired Dallas GM Dan Bacon was brought in to fix the team's cap woes, and did so with ease. Bacon saved the Stars from Salary Cap hell in a matter of 10 days. Trading the Perreault contract achieved that in one manoeuvre. The Forward was shipped to the Devils for a 5th, Dennis Robertson, and Reece Scarlett, in exchange for a 3rd, Zach Trotman, T.J. Tynan, and Zach Palmquist. Perreault finally had a chance to put the noise behind him, it was time for a fresh start. Only 10 days later, he was traded once again. This time to the San Jose Sharks, along with Zack Mitchell, in exchange for a 4th Round Pick, and Nick Baptiste. Devils General Manager Cole Bates insists that the plan was to keep Perreault, until it became clear New Jersey could use this opportunity to gain assets. The second year of Perreaults contract is reportedly what made the Bates think twice about keeping the Veteran Forward. In totality, New Jersey's transactions resulted in the following: OUT: New Jersey 5th Round Pick, $1 Million, Zack Mitchell - IN: 2019 CHI 3rd, 2019 MIN 4th, Zach Trotman, T.J. Tynan, Nick Baptiste, Zach Palmquist. Within a matter of 10 days, Perreault was on 3 different teams, traded twice within that time frame. Only one year after signing the lucrative contract, his $7.5 Million dollar cap hit became a crutch. Tough set of circumstances for a well respected player. In the end, Mathieu Perreault was just another Casualty of the Cap.
