Flyers clinch first playoff berth

2018-05-02
The Philadelphia Flyers are going to the playoffs!  and the team has managed to hit the 100 pt mark for the 1st time in franchise history.  Not only that, but they currently sit just 3 points back of the division leading Carolina Hurricanes with a game in hand.
The team has been able to string together their season by playing a great defensive game, along with generating offense by a committee.  3 players on the Flyers roster may hit the 30 goal mark on the year.   The captain Gabriel Landeskog has 27, Connor Brown sits on 26, and veteran 2nd line center Travis Zajac whom has been having a career year so far, currently has 29 goals to go along with 77 points in 72 games played.
Last season Philadelphia's young tender Matt Murray was able to have a pretty solid season despite getting no help from his then weak defence and shriveled up offense.  Following the signing of Dman Anton Stralman this past offseason, a move many criticized, that D core has been leagues better.  Stralman has been a horse back there, and has really been able to shore up the Flyers backend.
Another big factor in the teams improvement was bringing in Jumbo Joe Thornton to center the teams top line, along with the ever improving play of young Dman Darnell Nurse.
It is already a known fact that the team will look very different come the drop of the puck next season.  This was always to be a bridge season before several of the teams deep prospect pool players began to make the jump to the pro team.   Next years group will be a lot faster, but be mainly made up of rookies with the odd veteran dropped in here and there.
With both the Flyers and the Phantoms headed for playoff action, Philly is a buzz with hockey fever and excitement.
