Sharks Summer Update 2017

As the offseason winds down, here are a few random notes from in and around the San Jose Sharks organization.

The recent trade which saw the Sharks land Jacob Larsson from Anaheim in exhange for Mike Green has been well-received. Kyle Phillips was pleased with the swap, but expressed reservations about his SoCal trading partner, Sven Henry.

"As always, it was an an earnest and honest negotiation with Sven," Phillips said. "But let's just say his comments afterwards seemed suspiciously complimentary towards me. Don't forget, this is a GM who has repeatedly threatened to dress AHL goons in meaningless games.

"I just want him to remember that sharks eat ducks, and paper beats rock but rock beats scissors. Checkmate. Think about it."

For better or worse, the Sharks were one of the busiest teams in the free agent frenzy, reeling in a total of nine players. Unsurprisingly, not all the acquisitions have been met with rave reviews, as the huge money handed out to unproven prospect Jack Roslovic drew some skepticism around the league. The two-year, $7,000,000 deal given to aging goaltender Roberto Luongo also caused head scratching among analysts, who see it as flying in the face of what is clearly a scorched-earth rebuild in San Jose.

(For the record, the most active team in free agency was the Vegas Golden Knights, who signed a whopping 16 UFAs.)

• Speaking of rebuilding, there are rumors circulating that the Sharks are juggling two or three offers of mid-range draft picks for journeyman winger Cal Clutterbuck. Despite the toll that Clutterbuck's bang-and-crash style has clearly taken on him, his $1.5 million salary is appealing with free agency creating a premium on reasonably-paid depth players.

With the regular season approaching fast, prognosticators are suggesting already that this Sharks team could be the weakest in EHE league history. Phillips has heard the whispers, and says he can't let it bother him.

"I'm not blind," he said, "But I have to stay fully committed to the plan that's in place, otherwise we're truly lost."

In that vein, Phillips revealed that there has been fallout after the recent discord in the Sharks front office: the malcontent who leaked negative information to the press following the Luongo signing was identified and immediately dismissed.

No name has been revealed, but conspicuously absent from his office in recent days has been Jay Feaster, a holdover from the disastrous Keith Sletten regime.
