The only way to do that was to trade the most prized possession of the Ducks future. Defenseman Jacob Larsson is now a member of the main rivals; the San Jose Sharks. 

 

"We will miss him dearly in the not so distant future. We're convinced he's going to be a very good defenseman at the NHL level, unless he was to meet with some unfortunate accident..."

 

On an unrelated note Sven Henry announced a tentative roster for the opening game of the 2017/18 preseason. The following is the lineup expected to face-off against the Sharks in the annual Olivier Archambault Memorial Game of Waiver Claim Mastery:

A few words also about Mike Green, the new Duck. 

 

"He's a guy we've had our eye on for a while. Good player and a good fit for a club looking to get the defensemen involved in the offensive zone. He'll score for us, play well for us and stay with us for next year after we lose Buff and Shattenkirk. That was important for us, to secure an Elite offensive blueliner for 2018/19."

 

In a separate deal the Ducks acquired Stu Bickel from the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for Teddy Purcell. Purcell was the odd man out with the arrival of Green and Martinook. Bickel joins the organization for the specific purpose of doing to the entire San Jose Sharks roster what he did to Andrey Pedan a couple of years ago.
