Kings 2017-18 Season Preview 2017-10-12 Last season, the ragtag Los Angeles Kings turned a well-timed hot streak and the benefit of playing in the EHE's weakest division at the time into an entertaining -- if not completely deserved -- appearance in the Stanley Cup playoffs. “We were lucky to make it into the playoffs last year,” said GM Jay Seo, ahead of his first full season in Los Angeles. “I’m hoping that we don’t have to be so lucky this time around.” Roster Turnover: 2016-17 (beginning of season) 2017-18 Darren Helm - Jonathan Toews - Gustav Nyquist Valtteri Filppula - Patrice Bergeron - Brock McGinn R.J. Umberger - Jarret Stoll - Scottie Upshall Mason Raymond - Kris Newbury - Brandon Prust Andrei Markov - Brent Burns Chris Tanev - Kevin Klein Ben Lovejoy - Jonathan Ericsson Martin Jones Jonathan Bernier Johnny Gaudreau - Steven Stamkos (A) - Jakub Voracek Filip Forsberg (A) - Ryan Johansen - Viktor Arvidsson Scottie Upshall - Jori Lehtera - Jannik Hansen TBD - Cody Eakin - Adam Cracknell Zach Werenski - Jeff Petry Esa Lindell - Colton Parayko (C) Andy Greene - Rob O'Gara / TBD Jaroslav Halak Philipp Grubauer Last Season: 40-39-3, 7th in West, defeated EDM in WCQF (4-1), lost to VAN in WCSF (1-4) Key Additions: S. Stamkos, J. Voracek, F. Forsberg, R. Johansen and V. Arvidsson (trade); A. Greene (signed to a 1-year, $4.5M contract in free agency). Key Departures: J. Toews, S. Gostisbehere, B. Gallagher (trade); J. Quick (expansion draft) Strengths: The Kings’ new top-six forward group is much stronger than it was last season, and the addition of the JOFA line (Johansen, Forsberg, Arvidsson) should make for a more balanced attack alongside the returning Johnny Gaudreau and his new linemates Steven Stamkos and Jakub Voracek. Newly minted captain Colton Parayko and sophomore defenseman Zach Werenski are also returning to lead the Kings’ blueline this season. Weaknesses: Do the Kings have enough quality depth? The top end of this Kings roster is certainly much improved, but secondary scoring could be an issue, with veterans like Jannik Hansen and Scottie Upshall not being known for their offensive prowess. Netminders Jaroslav Halak and Philipp Grubauer will need to win by committee in the absence of an elite starting goaltender. Key Rookie: D Esa Lindell. Acquired from the Rangers on the eve of the expansion draft, the Finnish defenseman has the potential to be a key defensive stalwart in his maiden EHE campaign. He won’t put up a lot of points, but look for him to log a lot of tough defensive minutes and penalty kill work this season.
