Winnipeg draft party, Part 1

2017-09-03

Joe Tremblay has been very busy before the entry draft as he finalized 3 trades. Here’s an overview of these trades:

2017-07-31

To Boston:

Nikolai Goldobin

Noah Juulsen

10th overall pick 2017 (WPG)

To Winnipeg:

Ryan Strome

42nd overall pick 2017 (FLA)

5th pick 2018 (FLA)

Comments: “We think that this trade will help us right away. Last year, one of our problem was that we were lacking offense. Strome is a very good player with a lot of offensive potential. He got 33 points (10G, 23A) with the Coyotes last year. We think he could get 40 points with our team next year if he is with the good players. He is still young and we hope he will reach his full potential in 2 years or so. He needs to work on his consistency and self-confidence. We will be patient with him. He is signed for 3 years and we could sign him for an extension by the end of his current contract. Yes, I know, I give a lot, but we need to fix things right now, Wheeler, Backstrom, Spurgeon and Johnson will be UFA by the end of this season and we need to try a run this year.”

2017-08-02

To Nashville:

Julien Gauthier

To Winnipeg:

Anthony DeAngelo

81st overall pick 2017 (MIN)

Comments: “We have looked to our prospect pool and we realized that we were missing of offensive d-man. Since the trade of Klingberg last year, there were a big hole. Last year, he played with the San Antonio Rampage, putting 33 points in 76 games. He will have the chance to get a regular NHL spot in our defense quad this year. He needs to work on his ethic and defensive play, but we thing our coaching staff will help him to reach this aspect of his game. If he reaches his potential, we will have a good Power play in the future. As I said earlier, we will lose our two best d-man next year in UFA, and we need to think of some new young guys to replace them. I really like the potential of Gauthier, but we won’t see him in the big leagues soon and this was the price to pay to get player who can play right now on our team.”

To Anaheim:

Victor Olofsson

To Winnipeg:

111th overall pick 2017 (ANA)

Comments: Small trade here. We think that Olofsson will play in Europe for the rest of his life so I think this is better for our team to have a pick for him. We still think he has the potential to play pro, but it’s difficult for us to wait for him.
