Sabres Get Into The Top 3

2017-05-12

While 8 teams continue to battle it out in the playoffs, others had other things to look forward to, namely the 2017 draft lottery. It was a long season for the Sabres, seeing themselves finish the season 8th from the bottom. However, the draft lottery is always an exciting time for staff and for the fans. The lottery not only determines the order of the 1st round, but it also prepares GMs for an offseason of change and excitement to prepare themselves to introduce a new member into their organization.

Although unable to attend the lottery, Roberto Martucci and his staff were together, watching the event unfold. With the introduction of the Vegas Golden Knights, the Sabres held the 9th highest odds at 5.4%. While not much, it still gave people some hope. After all, last season the Sabres finished dead last and managed to get bumped outside of the top 3.

Commissioner Kevin Lacy began announcing the draft order, and pick number 9 came around. However, the Sabres weren’t there. The Detroit Red Wings would be selecting in their spot instead. This brought jubilation to both the staff and fans alike. They knew they had just got themselves a pick inside of the top 3. Finally, it was revealed that they would be selecting 3rd overall in the upcoming draft.

“I was shocked, honestly” said GM Martucci after seeing the Sabres logo pop up at 3rd overall. “I knew our chances of moving into the top 3 weren’t high, but there’s always a chance. I remember last season’s lottery, seeing us fall outside of the top 3 was really hard to swallow. I guess this is some sort of repayment, or karma as Kevin put it.”

When asked about the selection and what his plans were for the upcoming draft, Roberto had this to say: “Outside of the top 2, it can really be a number of players. We’re doing the best we can to analyze and determine which prospects will fit the bill for our team the most. We know what our needs are and we will try to address them this offseason” When asked about whether he plans on using the pick or moving it, he went on to say “I am open to moving the selection, however I will do what’s best for the organization. Selecting at number 3 will bring a very good player to Buffalo. However, I have to evaluate all possibilities, and the possibility of moving the pick to address some of our needs is one that could happen. We’ve got a long way to go, we’ll see how it turns out.”

While a year ago the Sabres were pushed out of the top 3, the tables have turned and now the Sabres hold the 3rd overall selection. Whether they decide to use it or move it remains to be seen, however I am sure there are many happy people in Buffalo.
