Sabres at the Deadline

2017-03-09

A few more days remain before the EHE trade deadline, and Buffalo Sabres GM Roberto Martucci has made it clear that the Sabres are sellers. The playoff picture in the EHE has become much tighter as the season has gone on, making for a great finish to the season.

“We know it takes a lot of talent to make an impact in this league. I would be lying if I said I don’t want to win, but at the same time I have to evaluate the roster and do what’s best for the team moving forward. I have been working the phones over the past week or so, speaking to as many GMs as I can to see if there are any opportunities to make some moves and improve our roster”

The Buffalo Sabres came into the season with not much expectation. Coming off an abysmal 2015-2016 season, it was expected to be much of the same. However, they have found a rhythm as they have notched 29 wins, only 2 less than all of last season. “I know we have talent on this team, there is no denying that. I don’t want to take away from the skill, but I also look at some of the other franchises and I can see some discrepancy between our roster and there’s. That’s where evaluating and being realistic comes in”

The Sabres still have a few more days to get some deals done and ship out some of their pending UFAs to any teams in or fighting for the playoffs. They also sit nicely at $44 million, and Roberto has made it clear that facilitating a deal by taking on a contract would not be an issue.

“The trade deadline is an exciting time around the league, I wish the GMs the best of luck in making moves and if they need me, they know where they can reach me”
