Mid Season Shakeup In Montreal

2025-04-03

BOOM! Montreal has been making moves, one trade in particular could be a franchise altering trade. Let's dive into both moves made by the Canadiens.

To Los Angeles Kings:
Jamie Drysdale
Luke Tuch
DAL 2nd 2025

To Montreal:
Mario Ferraro
NYR 2nd 2025

Once a highly touted prospect, Drysdale has found himself moving out West. In return Montreal is adding a solid top 4 defensive defenceman in Ferraro, while moving back a bit in the draft.

"We wish Jamie nothing but the best, but it was time for us to move on and find a solid foundational piece to our top 4 group. I still believe Drysdale will carve out a solid NHL career but we wanted someone who was a little more willing to put his body on the line night in and night out. Ferraro also brings some great character and leadership that this dressing room desperately needs." -GM Wills.

To Washington Capitals:
Matt Savoie
Thomas Milic
Sean Behrens
Semyon Varlamov
Chris Driedger
Travis Hamonic
MTL 2nd 2026 (conditional)
DAL 2nd 2026

To Montreal:
Andrei Vasilevskiy
Connor Carrick
Jack LaFontaine
Spencer Martin
Jon Martin

This is the big one, Montreal is bringing in a franchise goalie in Vasilevskiy. They give up a fair bit, especially if they make playoffs next year and lose their 2026 1st but in the end that scenario would be worth it for the Habs.

"This trade has been in the works for about a year now, we really wanted to bring in a goaltender that can carry us on a deep playoff run. There is still a lot of work to be done to build a team that can go on such a run but we have checked off one very important box for such a roster. This deal puts pressure on me to get that roster built sooner rather than later." -GM Wills

To everyones surprise the Montreal Canadiens have been one of the hottest teams of late, with a 7-2-1 record in their last 10 games they are effectively playing themselves out of a top 5 pick. Can this continue? Logic says no and there will be some regression coming soon, but GM Wills is very confident in the direction this team is going.

"We are going to continue to add when the time and deal is right, I've been working the phones non-stop for weeks now and I don't plan on stopping any time soon. While playoffs look like a long shot this year I truly believe we can make a big push to become a playoff team as early as next season." -GM Wills

Kyle Phillips

Great to finally see a GM doing good work in MTL. The Habs have been an EHE afterthought for too long.
