New Leadership Group in Buffalo

2024-01-29

With the EHE’s 10th season getting underway yesterday, the Buffalo Sabres look to start their 2023-2024 season at home tonight as they host the Ottawa Senators. The Sabres are coming into this season as Stanley Cup contenders once again, but they know that just because the roster is good on paper, it doesn’t translate to production on the ice.

With the new season starting this season, the Sabres decided to shake things up this year with their captains and assistant captains. With the new season beginning tonight, the Sabres decided to announce their new leadership group to their fans.

CAPTAIN: AUSTON MATTHEWS

Auston Matthews has been named the Captain this season in his 7th season. The prolific scoring center has been one of the EHE’s deadliest goal scorers since he entered the league and he has earned the nomination as captain of this team.

GM Comments: “Auston has been exceptional since he entered the league for us, and he has really been the one who has helped us take this team to where we are now. Everybody knows what he brings on the ice, but off the ice he is extremely professional and a great leader in the locker room. We love the steps he’s taken in his career so far”.

ASSISTANT CAPTAIN #1: JEFF PETRY

Petry was acquired from the Colorado Avalanche early last season and has been a guy who has really helped elevate the back line of this Sabres team. Not the flashiest players on the ice, but he gets the job when he’s out there.

GM Comments: “Jeff was a tremendous addition to this roster. We know he’s well respected and has a ton of experience in the league, so making him part of this leadership group was a no brainer. We know he’s capable of keeping things calm and keeping team morale where we need it to be to win hockey games”.

ASSISTANT CAPTAIN #2: CHRIS TANEV

Tanev is the defensive rock of this back line and he does a lot of the defensive dirty work when he’s on the ice. His defensive game is sound and is one of the better stay at home defenseman the EHE currently has.

GM Comments: “Chris has been the backbone of this team for a long time, and he really has been the perfect mentor for the young guys on this team. He stuck through a lot on this team and it’s finally paying off. Sometimes people forget about him, but his impact on this team cannot be underestimated. Every team needs a guy like Chris, and we’re extremely lucky to have him”.

The Sabres will open their season tonight hosting the Ottawa Senators with their new look leadership group ready to go. There are high aspirations for this team this season, let’s see if these guys can get the job done and go as deep as people think they can.
