Flyers win in Battle of the Metro Titans (Part I)

2023-07-12

Everyone knew this was going to be a tough series with the No.2 and No.3 teams in the league facing off against each other ... and that it was!

It was certainly a rivalry match-up with no love lost and both teams racking up the penalty minutes. Each team's top players took full advantage with both teams powerplays hitting over 28% success rate with Hedman and Ovechkin (2 goals each) leading the way for Philly and Joel Erikson Ek and Andrei Svechnikov (5 points a piece) leading the way for Islanders).

Ultimately, this series was won at 5-5 and this is where Philly had the dominance ... particularly over the Islanders top players with Mackinnon, Hertl and Svechnikov going a combined -16.

Prior to the series we tabbed two players to watch and they certainly lived up to that billing. Marner put up 9 points and finised the series as one of the few plus players with +3 across the 6 games. Hedman led the Flyers from the blue line, putting up 5 points, +3, whilst leading the team in ice time.

Finally, we just want to congratulate Mr Phillips and the New York Islanders for a fantastic season. I have no doubt that with the talent that their squad possesses, combined with Mr Phillip's aggressive pursuit to improve all facets of his organisation, that they'll back chasing Lord Stanley next season.
