Flames shake up roster 2023-01-28 As the Calgary Flames head out on a 7-game road trip, General Manager Stephen Gough pulled the trigger on a roster shake up after last night's 1-0 loss to the San Jose Sharks. During the game, GM Stephen could be seen actively talking on his phone and the question was too who and what was going on. It wasn’t long before fans found out that he had been talking with General Manager Justin Tang of the Dallas Stars. In what turned out to be a sizeable trade that will shake the team up. Heading to Dallas was Nazem Kadri, Scott Mayfield, and Kevin Bahl. Coming to Calgary will be Boone Jenner, Jake Trouba, and a 2023 3rd round pick. So why the deal when both the Calgary Flames and Calgary Wranglers have started off strong. Well according to inside sources. The deal was made to strengthen the Flames back end and to get Trouba, an important piece had to go. The deal allows the Calgary Flames to add some more overall defense to the team. While we lose some offense with Kadri, the addition of Jenner minimizes it. Both Mayfield and Kadri are UFA’s in 2 years' time so having Trouba on a 3-year deal also gives the defensive prospects time to grow further. As for Bahl, he was a huge asset on the team however it was becoming clear there was no room for him on the big team with Sanderson, Foote, Boqvist, Klevin, and JBD on the way. With those 4 guys chopping at the bit, there may still need to be further moves down the road. Moving Bahl opens up a roster spot and gains the team a 3rd rounder in 2024. Coach Sutter had this to say “Those guys will be missed; they were part of a strong leadership group on and off the ice. Getting guys like Trouba and Jenner will come in and help push this team forward. I would personally like to thank them for all they have to contributed to the organization. Getting Trouba allows us to move some players down the depth chart and give us even further depth for the next couple of years. Jenner will slot into the vacant 2nd line center position. As for who will be the next captain will be determined at some point in the future”
