Flames 2022 Draft spot light 2022-12-20 Going into the 2022 EHE Draft the Calgary Flames this past off-season GM Stephen found himself in unfamiliar territory. For the first time in GM Stephen’s tenure, he held no 1st or 3rd round picks. The Flames 1st rounder had been moved in a mid-season deal with Colorado that saw Anthony Mantha join the team. The Flames 3rd was moved to bring in Nikita Zadorov. Two moves helped bolster the team in their run to their first playoff appearance since GM Stephen burned the roster down in a rebuild. Heading into the draft GM Stephen had some targets in mind. As players went off the board going into the second round the odds appeared likely some would drop to Calgary. With the 63rd pick, the Calgary Flames were proud to select a hometown boy from the Okotoks Oilers, forward Rieger Lorenz. Where Lorenz put up 85 points in 60 games while playing in front of friends and family. Lorenz is a 6’2 forward who played left wing, shoots the puck with authority, and can score at will while playing a sound defensive game. Lorenz will be heading off to the University of Denver in the fall but we truly believe he’ll be a huge addition in the not-to-distant future. As the Flames didn’t have a 3rd round pick they had to wait until the 4th round where they elected to take some high-risk high-reward players. Keep an eye out for future player recaps.
