Dallas Stars 2020 Entry Draft Review

2020-10-31

The Dallas Stars. The Stanley Cup Champion Dallas Stars.

As might be expected for a team with high expectations for team success, the draft capital for the Dallas Stars headed into the 2020 Entry Draft was not aplenty. Armed with a 3rd, 4th, and two 5th in the weeks leading up to the draft, GM Dan Bacon again decided to use some draft capital to help bolster the big club with aspirations of back to back Championships. Bacon dealt the 3rd and 4th to the Calgary Flames in order to bring in defense help in the form of Travis Hamonic. Hamonic will be expected to help fill the void left by UFAs Jake Muzzin and Brayden McNabb.

That trade completed, it left the Stars with only two 5th round picks for the draft. Bacon made attempts on draft day to pull off a trade, but without draft capital to help make something happen, he was unable to do so.

Let's breakdown their 2 picks:

#130 overall - Luke Prokop

The Stars were extremely pleased to see the player selected 73rd overall to the Nashville Predators in the NHL Draft still available to them when it came time for their first pick of the draft. Prokop is a large human and described as a prototypical defensive defenseman. He will not wow you with his offensive skill at this point of his development, he possesses strong positional play and good skating for his size. Prokop is expected to return to the Calgary Hitmen of the WHL to continue his development.

#134 overall - Dylan Garand

The Stars had one main objective in this draft and that was to add a young netminder to the pipeline. They hope to have found their man in Dylan Garard. While Garand might be described by some as an "undersized" goalie for today's game, the Stars brass is not deterred by his 6'1" frame. Garand possesses quick feet and a quick glove. With a strong season in the WHL with the Kamloops Blazers last season, Garand is expected to return to the program as the unquestioned starter to continue his development.

Armed with returning their starting G, top 4 D and top 6 forward group from last season and adding quality kids to the prospect pool, the immediate and long term outlook for the franchise continues to shine bright.
