Flyers make a team record 16 picks during the 2020 draft

2020-10-29

The plan from day 1 of Tommy Barr’s GM tenure was to stockpile futures over the next couple of drafts and then look to spend future picks of acquiring talent that will help in the here and now. This year was no different.

2019 recap:

The team made a total of 12 picks during the 2019 draft.

2020 draft:

Going into the draft the Flyers had a total of 10 picks and they were quite happy to go ahead and make those selections … however with a few trades and “Kiviranta-gate” they walked away with a total of 16 picks. We can certainly say that the prospect pool is stocked up!!

Draft selections:

Note: You may see a theme … undersized with high-end skills/hockey sense J

COLE PERFETTI (LW)

DRAFTED: 7th

DRAFT BOARD RANKING: 6th
TEAM/LEAGUE: Saginaw Spirit

Perfetti really stood out at the Hlinka-Greet Cup with 12 points in 5 games and we’ve liked him since. High end puck skills and hockey sense. One of the smartest players in the draft. Whilst he may not be immediately NHL ready, we believe he could be one of the best playmakers to come out of the 2020 draft.

EMIL ANDRAE (D)
DRAFTED: 36th

DRAFT BOARD RANKING: 26th
TEAM/LEAGUE: HV71

Whilst some may view Emil as under-sized for a NHL defender we don’t see it as much of an issue, though. He’s good defensively for his size and don’t mistake his lack of height for a lack of sturdiness. Offensively he’s highly skilled and creative.

RONI HIRVONEN (C)
DRAFTED: 67th

DRAFT BOARD RANKING: 40th
TEAM/LEAGUE: Assat

Like Andrae, Hirvonen is an undersized player but has been a successful player at the club and international level. He got regular minutes and power play time in Liiga this past season and since the restart. Hirvonen’s greatest asset has become his ability to find space in the offensive zone to get open. He is a quality playmaker and we see 2nd line upside.

DANIL GUSHCHIN (RW)
DRAFTED: 76th

DRAFT BOARD RANKING: 42nd
TEAM/LEAGUE: Muskegon Lumberjacks

He never stops moving, he’s relentless on the forecheck, he plays bigger than he is and once he chases down loose pucks, he’s got the skill and the agility to dart through traffic to make plays. Really like the fact that he is already playing in North America.

DMITRI VORONKOV (C)
DRAFTED: 89th

DRAFT BOARD RANKING: N/A – overage (88th on 2019 board)
TEAM/LEAGUE: AK Bars Kazan

Voronkov has continued to develop, impress and become more than I thought he would be going into the 2019 draft. Had a really nice WJC and has taken a step forward since the restart with his KHL team.

ZION NYBECK (RW)
DRAFTED: 91st

DRAFT BOARD RANKING: 32nd
TEAM/LEAGUE: HV71

He’s put up huge numbers in the Swedish junior ranks and has a ton of skill. When you watch him with the puck, his ability to dangle clearly stands out. Again the size (5’7”) is a concern but we really like the combination of high-end skills and hockey sense.

JACK AHCAN (D)
DRAFTED: 49th

DRAFT BOARD RANKING: N/A - overager
TEAM/LEAGUE: St. Cloud State University

Ahcan has been a top defenseman in the NCHC the last few years and is a fun player to watch. He’s full of skill and offensive creativity. He’s not the elite speedster that you’d like at 5-foot-8, but he’s got great edges and can evade pressure.

CONNOR MCCLENNON (RW)
DRAFTED: 97th

DRAFT BOARD RANKING: 71st
TEAM/LEAGUE: Winnipeg Ice

Shoot first player with good hockey sense.

Alan Millar, GM for Canada’s U18 team, on McClennon: “He can really shoot the puck and he can help a power play.”

CARTER SAVOIE (LW)
DRAFTED: 102nd

DRAFT BOARD RANKING: 69th
TEAM/LEAGUE: Sherwood Park Crusaders

Needs to work on his compete level and shift-to-shift efforts but there is no doubting his raw skills.

TY TULLIO (RW)
DRAFTED: 103rd

DRAFT BOARD RANKING: 70th
TEAM/LEAGUE: Oshawa Generals

You know why … high end hockey sense and skill yet undersized. Productive scorer who generates a high volume of shots.

DONOVAN SEBRANGO (D)
DRAFTED: 107th

DRAFT BOARD RANKING: 82nd
TEAM/LEAGUE: Kitchener Rangers

Kris Draper “good skating D-man, plays with a physical edge.”

EEMIL VIRO (D)
DRAFTED: 108th

DRAFT BOARD RANKING: 67th
TEAM/LEAGUE: TPS

Good defender with plus skating.

Kris Draper on Viro “just a full-character kid (who) has real leadership qualities.”

“He knows how to play the game and he plays the game the right way.”

DAEMON HUNT (D)
DRAFTED: 111th

DRAFT BOARD RANKING: 77th
TEAM/LEAGUE: Moose Jaw Warriors

Missed most of season after a skate blade cut his arm but we like the mobility and combativeness as a defenceman.

NHL scout on Hunt: “He’s a tremendous defender because of his skating and physicality. The offense will be questioned but it’s in him, he had no forwards to get the puck to.”

ELMER SODERBLOM (RW)
DRAFTED: 129th

DRAFT BOARD RANKING: N/A – overager.
TEAM/LEAGUE: Frolunda

Went for a big guy!!

He’s a 6-foot-6 forward with excellent hands who can dangle defenders consistently, which intrigues. Soderblom had a big year at the Swedish junior level, as a top scorer in the league.

COLBY AMBROSIO (C)
DRAFTED: 129th

DRAFT BOARD RANKING: 81st
TEAM/LEAGUE: Tri-City Strom

Ambrosio was a point per game player in the USHL and one of the league’s leading shot generators. He has a lot of pace in his game and a great skater

DANIIL CHECHELEV (G)
DRAFTED: 156th (Bonus pick)

DRAFT BOARD RANKING: 91st
TEAM/LEAGUE: Russkie Vityazi Chekhov

First goalie drafted in the Tommy Barr Flyers era.

Dominating the Russian 2nd division and junior leagues with a superb GAA and save percentage.
Long shot selection but we like the potential with Russian Goalies.
