those picks end up being the grease that speeds along many trades....
round 6 and 7 picks are not a bad thing in any way..... why not mirror the NHL as well in this department???
I don't know how many times I have to tell you this, Ryan. THIS IS NOT THE NHL. If you want to sweeten a deal, use your 5th, add cash, add a player. There is always a way to make a trade work without adding 6th and 7th round picks. That's YOUR job as a GM. Some GMs don't like to scout the draft beyond the third round, so they just throw late-round picks to deals because they don't want to have to deal with it later. A lot of GMs just take "highest remaining player," which usually isn't even best available anyway. Me? I murder people with 6th and 7th round picks. That's a pretty huge discrepancy and discrepancies are bad for the league's long-term longevity. I said it before and I'll say it again. Why 7? Why not 5? Why not 9? Because of supply and demand. I've been in leagues that only run four-round entry drafts. There wasn't a problem there. It raises the value of the draft picks and you can still pull your "gems" in the 4th and 5th round. We will be doing five-round drafts, though pretty likely that next year's will be seven rounds.

With the inclusion, could we extend the inaugural draft extend another 5 rounds if necessary.
A couple of reasons. You get an extra year to scout the players that were taken last June, for one. Primarily, it's because since this is the inaugural season where everyone has an equal chance of making the playoffs, teams that draft very well could still finish at the bottom of the standings. Add a player like McDavid or Eichel to a good roster and it's a pretty distinct advantage to actually miss the playoffs this year and draft high. Adding the 2014 class to next year's class lessens that advantage and encourages GMs to not intentionally tank this season (which is forbidden in the rules anyway).
