The Russian Bear

Last year during the 2020 draft, GM Steve sat patient with fingers crossed as the second round started. The Flames had pick 38 and had their eye on a player that hoped would slide to them. Luckily he did and at pick 38, GM Steve selected right wing Igor Sokolov. Sokolov stands at 6 foot 4 and 217 lbs.

Sokolov had previously slid through 2 past NHL and EHE drafts, and when the Flames had the chance they took it. What got my attention in picking this player was his character and determination to get better.

When reading up on him I was impressed with how he decided to stay in Canada during Covid and instead of laying around and playing video games, he went out and made a difference in his community by delivering groceries to people with autoimmune issues. His character also showed on the ice due to his hard work which resulted in him lead the Quebec league in goals in his last season.  His hard work and determination continued over to the AHL where he leads all American league rookies with 15 goals and tied for 5^th league wide among all players. He is also tops with 25 points on the Belleville Senators.

Listening to Sokolov speak recently to The Wally and Meth Show, the decision to select him was validated even more. He showed poise, confidence, and openness during his interview. Sharing how he took it upon himself to take control of his career and recognize what needs to improve. While giving recognition to his billet family, and everyone who helped him along the way.

I have no doubt that if he continues to remain humble, grateful, maintain his self-awareness and continues to grow he’ll be a great 2^nd or 3^rd line guy in the NHL and EHE.  Now hopefully Drake Batherson can get a good word into Crosby and get him invited to the Cape Breton skating camps with Crosby and Mackinnon.

Sokolov’s favorite player is Jaromir Jagr. If Sokolov can be a fraction of Jagr, the EHE Calgary Flames fans will have a great player to look forward too.
