2017 Player Deactivations

The following list of players are scheduled to not be eligible for EHE play in the 2017-18 season, due to retirement or agreements they have with teams in Europe or Asia. You may still retain their rights depending on their contract situation and age. GMs also have the right to elect three of their own players on this list to remain active for next season, if they are currently under contract and have not retired. Should they return to play for an NHL organization next season, they will qualify for reactivation.

Hellbergs taking off to the KHL? That's a little disappointing. Raanta will likely be taken by Vegas in the expansion draft and Lundqvist is getting up there in age. Hellberg would've been wise to stay with the Rangers.

My guess is Hellberg wants a starting role and/or signed for a ton of money to jump to the KHL. If he didn't make the Rangers next season, he'd probably have no spot in the organization with Halverson, Nell, and Skapski all battling for spots in Hartford, plus Shestyorkin on the way. Heck, Rangers may not have qualified his rights anyway. What you said is well-assessed but I'm guessing Hellberg went with the sure thing -- well... as sure as KHL contracts go...

With Karl Stollery now signing in the KHL for the 2017/18 season, can I still use him in the Sim for 2017/18 if I seek special permission for him to remain active (as one of my three special overseas transfer people) for another year?

This is correct, since Stollery would still be under contract for 2017-18.
