2020 Player Deactivations

I've put off releasing this just because we're not all that close to real hockey resuming in North America that players are really moving around much. I imagine this list will be a lot smaller than in previous seasons, with the imbalance of European leagues tentatively scheduled to begin 2020-21 in September, while the NHL is likely to still be honoring contracts from the 2019-20 season.

The following list of players are scheduled to not be eligible for EHE play in the 2020-21 season, due to retirement or agreements they have with teams in Europe or Asia. You may still retain their rights depending on their contract situation and age. Later in the offseason, GMs will also have the right to elect three of their own players on this list to remain active for next season, if they are under contract for the 2020-21 season and physically capable of playing, have not retired, and were not already chosen for reactivation last season.

Things are already starting to tilt pretty significantly with teams loaning their prospects to European leagues. Therefore, as I previously anticipated in the first offseason update video, I am declaring that teams will be permitted to activate prospects who would have qualified for ratings in 2020-21 and have never previously been activated. Under normal circumstances, teams would have to wait for the player to return to a North American league before they could be signed.

If you are a team who wishes to activate a prospect who would be considered an overseas transfer, you will be required to sign them to the maximum term allowed for their age in the CBA.

I don't want to provide an update on the number of overseas transfers that you can retain on your active roster for 2020-21 until we get close to the start of the European season. I still expect this number to be higher than the typical 3 allowed.

I decided last week without posting that players being loaned overseas because of NHL uncertainty are exempt from being considered overseas transfers. A list of such players is now included in the OP. There is one exception to this - Tobias Geisser - because he already had requested to be transferred back to Switzerland last season and that was a personal decision which had nothing to do with the pandemic.

I haven't been able to get this posted for a bit but the last day for player deactivations from teams was back on October 16. A couple players also have returned in the past couple of months. They're listed below but have been removed from the master list since they technically never left.

I've also decided that since the decision was made that players who were newly loaned to European clubs for 2020-21 are exempt, we will keep the limit of players who can be reactivated to 3. Again, players cannot be reactivated if they retired or if they are not already under contract.
