Worst:
Adam Cracknell @ $3,950,000 for 1 year
The craziest thing is that this wasn't like two guys continually re-raising each other. It was something like five teams offering these insane contracts for him! I'll never understand the teams that won't go more than $8 mil for Doughty but are willing to give $2-4 mil for Cracknell, Luff, White, etc.

Salary floor implications?

That's what I thought when I saw the bidding war for Cracknell. But I checked and every team was over $50 mil in salary. It's a head scratcher for me, but everyone's free to run their team the way they want. I don't judge, I let the standings do that for me :P

Worst UFA signing this year? any candidates?
Jacob Markstrom @ $7,000,000 plus $3,500,000 signing bonus for 1 year
Much better goalies got much less money on a per year basis. Makes Cam Ward @ $2,750,000 plus $2,200,000 signing bonus look like a steal.

Lol, sometimes it the standings a few years to catch up to your good decisions. I'm confident that in a few years I'll be back on top.

Although the Cracknell AAV is clearly way too high, I don't see one year deals without Bonuses having much, if any implications. Unless of course your already close to the cap..

This is correct. The minimum you must pay is the FMV. So if you want to pay a base salary below the FMV, you must pay the difference as a signing bonus. The limit on how much is tabled in the CBA. Those percentages are based on the total amount of the contract.

In an example of a one-year contract, you can cut the FMV salary by up to 50% by paying as a signing bonus -or- if you pay more than FMV salary, you can pad your offer by adding up to 50% more in signing bonus and essentially pay the same in bonus as in salary.

It's definitely not the easiest thing to explain and I've tried improving the language in the CBA about it quite a few times.
Sorry to bump the 2018 UFA thread but I lost out on a player today and was told to read this section of the forum as to why.. Then I thought I understood after reading this post.. 5 minutes after sending the "ok I got it" email I read it again really slow, I'm confused again..

Kevin, when you said:

Did you mean to say?:

The latter is understandable. And should be added to the CBA if this is your intention for the signing rules.

On a 1 year deal you can pay up to a 50% bonus based on salary.

If a players FMV is 5 million for example. If you want to pay the lowest possible total in FMV price and CCV you can offer him:

1 Year, 2.5 Million contract with a 2.5. million bonus.

If you want to go above and being his FMV to raise the CCV so lets say you want to offer him a deal worth 7 million you can offer him:

1 year, 3.5 million contract with a 3.5 million bonus.

What he is essentially saying is that anytime you offer someone a 1 year contract..50% of what you want to pay him in total can be bonus money rather then it being all salary and cap hit.
