Hawks Break The Ice, Acquire Bonino and Ceci

2020-05-01

In what up to this point has been a slow crawl to the 3:00pm EDT EHE trade deadline on Sunday, the Chicago Blackhawks have made the first big splash heading into the weekend, shipping out Jakub Voracek along with Brett Kulak in exchange for Nick Bonino, Cody Ceci, prospect Tyler Wall, and a fourth-round draft pick in 2020.

Bonino, 32, had 12 goals and 19 assists in 66 games with Philadelphia. He will be looked upon to improve a woeful penalty kill that has been below 80% efficiency for most of the season. Bonino is signed through the 2021-22 season at $4.375 million per year and should draw into the lineup Saturday night as the Blackhawks take on the Anaheim Ducks.

Ceci, 26, has one goal and 13 assists in 52 games this season, also with the Flyers. He should provide stability on the backend and figures to be paired with Mack Weegar. Ceci will be a restricted free agent at the end of the year and also should be in the lineup on Saturday night.

Wall, a 22-year old goaltending prospect who just wrapped up a stellar collegiate career at UMass/Lowell in the NCAA, is expected to make his professional debut next season. Wall went 18-8-6 in 2019-20 with 2.10 GAA and a .931 save percentage, earning consideration as a finalist for the Mike Richter Award for the nation's best goaltender.

Hawks GM Thomas Gidlow is expected to have press availability later this evening. Comments will be posted on the EHE-Blackhawks Twitter feed.

Setting aside the assets changing hands here, I'm fascinated to see how this works out for you, Thomas. Your team has been absolutely on fire, so changing the chemistry is a risky move.

Thomas Gidlow I thought it over hard the past week or so. Being hot now is great, but unfortunately that momentum generally doesnt carry into the playoffs. Wanted to strengthen the D and feel the O should be fine losing Voracek. Thanks for the feedback! :)
