Flames Offseason Trade Recap

2019-12-11

During the off season GM Steve took some down time to travel to Vancouver Island to enjoy a 2 week vacation with a large number of Scouts. OK if you consider being with approximately 2000+ youth a vacation anyways.  After taking that time away GM Steve returned to the Flames organization and began a revamp of the team in an effort to improve the depth of the team while hopefully changing the culture and improve the team. Not only were trades made but the Flames also drafted 6 players to the organization.

Trade 1 (with OTT):

Tyler Toffoli and a 4th for Jonny Tychonik and Zach Senyshyn.

Toffoli was initially brought in to improve scoring. Toffoli was later traded away to add to the depth of the team.

Trade 2 (with TB):

Justin Faulk for Nazem Kadri

These conversations went back and forth for a few weeks however once settled the Flames were happy to acquire Nazem Kadri. The plan is have him play 1st line center while Elias Pettersson learns the game more. Some experts have said they would have preferred Faulk over Kadri due to his contract status however the Flames are not concerned and will re-evaluate his UFA status when it comes around.

Trade 3 (with NYR):

Brendan Lemieux, Brandon Davidson, $750,000 for Jacob De La Rose, Xavier Bernard, Jacob Ragnarsson, 2020 DP - Round 3 (EDM)

Another deal that took a little while to come to pass however at the end of the day both teams were happy with the outcome. The line of thinking here was to gain some young assets for the future.

Trade 4 (with Det):

Shea Theodore for Alex Tuch

This was one of the tougher deals for the Flames to make as Shea Theodore will have a bright future ahead of him. It was a deal that both GM’s were happy with as it met the needs of each other. Unfortunately for the Flames moved Tuch later one.

Trade 5 (with CHI):

Jack Johnson, Micro Mueller, Matt Luff for Nick Paul, 2020 4th, cash

From a team perspective this was a straight up cash dump to free up salary for Free Agency while also gaining some help for the Stocton Heat. Unfortunately the Flames did not land the big fish they were looking out for.

Trade 6 (with VGK):

Joel Edmundson and 2021 3rd for Tyler Toffoli and 2021 5th

This is the first of 2 flips for GM Steve who doesn’t like to flip players. Edmundson brings to the team some solid defence to round out the bottom half of the defense while also upgrading a pick.

Trade 7 (with NYI):

Colton White for Stuart Skinner and cash

This was a deal that GM Steve feels he may regret, unfortunately with 2 new goalies coming into the league he had to make some room and flexibility to the roster when it came to the position.

Trade 8 (with CLB):

Daniel Carr and Graham Knott for cash

Just a straight up roster clearing trade.

Trade 9 (with LAK):

Louis Domingue for 4th round pick

Another roster spot clearing move while picking up a pick for the future.

Trade 10 (with NJD):

Troy Terry for Henrik Borgstrom

The first of 2 moves to get players that GM Steve preferred and build depth down the middle. With the current depth on the wings and 2 wingers coming into the organization next season the move was worth the risk.

Trade 11 (with SJS):

Ryan Poehling for Jordan Kyrou

Another move that GM Steve picked up a player that he preferred.

Trade 12 (with NYR):

Radek Faksa, K’Andre Miller, Chistian Jaros, Jansen Harkins.

For

Alex Tuch, Brett Kulak, Sam Morin.

Probably GM Steve’s toughest trade this off season and maybe the most controversial. Tuch was acquired earlier in a trade for a quality defenseman only to be seen moved out before he even played a game in a Flames Jersey.

In the process of picking up a defensive center, and some good young pieces to help the Stockton Heat this season the Flames added more roster flexibility while adding a future quality top 4 defensive prospect in K’Andre Miller.

Without the inclusion of Miller this deal would not happened. Some experts have said this puts the team behind however it sets up for a solid rebuild to continue as Miller will be playing meaningful minutes and growing together with the players like Rasmus Dahlin, Cale Makar, Bode Wilde, and being led by Jacob Slavin.

Tuch’s future is bright but with Owen Tippett and Kaapo Kakko on the way this deal is more about the future.
