Two Big Moves Made For The Future

2020-01-22

The New Jersey Devils have made a pair of trades within the past week. Both very different deals. These deals will give them a head start to where they want to be in the next couple years. With plenty of assets New Jersey was able to be flexible and improve their weaker areas.

New Jersey and New York deal done on 1-15-2020

GM Knedel’s comments on the trade from his press conference. “First off the Devils wish to thank Colton Point for his services and Sean Durzi for his time spent with the organization. We made this move for a couple different reasons. At this moment our goalies in Springfield (Comrie and Oettinger) still need some time to develop and with both Quick and Kinkaid not getting younger, we needed to find a goalie of the future. Georgi has a bright future ahead of him and we’re excited to watch him develop. Miles Wood can make an instant impact with the team right now and in the future, and has the potential to grow. Lastly Ilya is someone who we’re excited about and believe will make an impact when he joins the organization next season.”

New Jersey and Pittsburgh Penguins 1-20-20

The trade made today with the Penguins wasn’t a shocker in any way. Eberle has been shopped around for most of the season and as of recently so has Russell. Both players deals were expiring after the season and both at a high cap hit. For a team looking to get younger and is rebuilding and planning for the future this makes sense. Thomas Hickey will come in and fill the defensive role that Russell previously was assigned for the team.

GM Knedel on both trades “The two trades we have made put us in a good place moving forward with our team. We gave up some picks but then made some of them back. We’re happy with all the pieces we’re gaining and believe that they will help us reach the playoffs in the next few years, which is our goal.”
