Islanders Make Zero Trades at the Deadline

2020-05-07

The EHE Trade Deadline produced a flurry of late activity and transactions, with numerous trades on the final two days. Many teams added depth and some big names moved, but the Islanders with their manage group headed by GM Tony Chiu, made no trades.

The Islanders are currently in a fierce fight for a wildcard playoff spot.

"There were several reasons for not making any trades" after we were able to reach GM Tony Chiu, who laid out in detail why no trades were made at the deadline.

"First of all, we had limited financial flexibility. We don't have that much cap space, and our payroll is pretty maxed out. To add somebody we would have had to subtract from somewhere, and that doesn't make sense right now."

"Second, our organizational depth and young players is still not where we would like it to be. The organization from ownership on down realizes it is crucial for the long-term health of the organization  to have a pipeline of young players, and to have that we need to go into the draft with all our draft picks."

"Also, we really didn't feel like we needed to do anything drastic. The answers are already here in that room. Mitch and Mac are carrying us right now, some of the other guys have the skill and talent and they need and can step up. Everything we need is already in the organization, we just need to find it."

The outspoken GM also commented on one benefit of the deadline finally passing in the league.

"you know what's great? I no longer have to waste my time and energy from a GM constantly harassing me to trade him franchise cornerstones. Why would i do that, in fucking April? We actually spoke to the league office on whether we could put another GM on ignore, the league said no and said we had to respond to all inquiries. The league however did not comment when we asked them how much time and effort we had to spend on the responses."

The fact you want to put a GM on ignore for wanting to make a trade with you (in a sim league no less - gasp!) makes that last paragraph a bit cringe inducing. It's not a waste - it's part of what makes this fun. "Outspoken"? One article every 6 months and hardly any comments on anything else. Soft-spoken, maybe (and no, I am not the GM in question, but they shouldn't be made to feel like idiots for wanting to discuss trades in a sim league).
