2019 EHE DRAFT REVIEW - Pacific

Again, these are just my opinions and I'm not a pro scout. So take these with a grain of salt. Here we go, the Pacific division:

Stu Hopkins - Anaheim Ducks:

8th Overall: Vasily Podkolzin RW - SKA St. Petersburg (KHL)
32nd Overall: John Beecher C/LW - USDP
33rd Overall: Brett Leason RW - Prince Albert Raiders (WHL)
64th Overall: Jayden Struble D - St. Sebastian's School (USHS)
69th Overall: Jack Malone C/RW - Youngstown Phantoms (USHL)

Last Years Grade: A
This Years Grade: A

Really solid draft, though not drafting past round 3 will make it look good. Beecher is my favorite pick here and Struble looks like a good project to take on. Love the reach on Malone as well, right handed shot who's commited to Cornell next year. I'm not a fan of Leason, but he does look like a good pick in round 2.

Tim Scholl - Arizona Coyotes:

151st Overall: Zach Emond G - Rouyn-Noranda Huskies (QMJHL)

Last Years Grade: B
This Years Grade: B

Tim only had a late pick, and goalies are hard as hell to project. That said, this is a perfect place to draft a big goalie and let him simmer. With Harvey moving on from the Huskies, we'll get a good look at Emond as a #1 and should be able to better evaluate what Tim has here.

Stephen Gough - Calgary Flames:

2nd Overall: Kaapo Kakko RW - TPS (Liiga)
35th Overall: Antti Tuomisto D - Assat U20 (Jr. A SM-liiga)
47th Overall: Mads Sogaard G - Medicine Hat Tigers (WHL)
82nd Overall: Simon Lundmark D - Linkoping HC (SHL)
94th Overall: Mark Kastelic C - Calgary Hitmen (WHL)
97th Overall: Austin Wong C - Okotoks Oilers (AJHL)

Last Years Grade: C
This Years Grade: C+

Kakko is a no brainer at 2nd overall & Sogaard is one of the better goalie prospects out there. But the rest of Stephen's draft is underwhelming. Wong looks like a good project to take on though.

Gilbert Dubois - Edmonton Oilers:

144th Overall: Antti Saarela LW - Lukko (Liiga)

Last Years Grade: C
This Years Grade: C

I like the Saarela pick by Gilbert here, he seems to be the type of player that can play anywhere in a lineup whether it be on the power play or penalty kill. He's under contract the next two years, so he'll get to develop in Finland.

Brandyn Erickson - LA Kings:

19th Overall: Thomas Harley D - Mississauga Steelheads (OHL)
52nd Overall: Robert Mastrosimone C/LW - Chicago Steel (USHL)
74th Overall: Ilya Nikolayev C - Loko Yarolavl (KHL)
122nd Overall: Sammy Walker C - Minnesota Golden Gohpers (NCAA)

Last Years Grade: B
This Years Grade: C

I'm not very high on Harley and nobody else drafted by Brandyn here jumps off the page as great value in their respective draft positions. Walker did put up respectable numbers in his first year in NCAA though.

Kyle Phillips - San Jose Sharks:

110th Overall: Aaron Huglen RW/LW - Fargo Force (USHL)
114th Overall: Giovanni Vallati D - Oshawa Generals (OHL)
119th Overall: Blake Lizotte C - St. Cloud State (NCAA)
132nd Overall: Declan Chisholm D - Peterborough Petes (OHL)
134th Overall: John Leonard LW - Umass Amherst (NCAA)
148th Overall: Akira Schmid G - Omaha Lancers (USHL)

Last Years Grade: B+
This Years Grade: B

I loved the 4th round for Kyle, been a fan of Vallati and last year he showed there's some offensive potential in there. Not as big a fan of the 5th round here but not too bad all around for only having late picks.

Travis Flemming - Vancouver Canucks:

4th Overall: Alex Turcotte C - USDP
56th Overall: Vladislav Gavrikov D - SKA St. Petersburg (KHL)
88th Overall: Max Veronneau RW - Princeton U (NCAA)
104th Overall: Lucas Carlsson D - Rockford IceHogs (AHL)
139th Overall: Ben Jones C - Niagara IceDogs (OHL)
152nd Overall: Mathias Emilio Pettersen C/RW - U of Denver (NCAA)

Last Years Grade: A
This Years Grade: B+

The only pick that doesn't jump out here is Jones, your supposed to dominate in the OHL as a 20 year old on a stacked team. Favorite pick here is Pettersen, this kid has been on the radar since he was like 8.

Doug Waite - Vegas Golden Knights:

25th Overall: Nils Hoglander LW - Rogle BK (SHL)
34th Overall: Samuel Poulin LW - Sherbrooke Phoenix (QMJHL)
87th Overall: Albert Johansson D - Farjestad BK (SHL)
92nd Overall: Ilya Konovalov G - Lokomotiv Yaroslavl (KHL)
149th Overall: Tyler Tucker D - Barrie Colts (OHL)

Last Years Grade: C
This Years Grade: B

Doug nailed the first two picks here, reaching on Hoglander and having Poulin fall in his lap in round 2. Not really a fan of Tucker, but it's not bad value that late in the draft. Russian goalie may never make his way to North America.
