2019 EHE DRAFT REVIEW - Central

2019-07-25

Okay, let's start by saying these are just my opinions and the grades given out should be taken with a grain of salt. Now, let's dive into the Central:

Thomas Gidlow - Chicago Blackhawks:

77th Overall: Ben Gleason D - Texas Stars (AHL)
85th Overall: Johan Sodergran LW/RW - Linkoping HC (SHL)
95th Overall: Martin Pospisil C - Sioux City Musketeers (USHL)
117th Overall: Ryan Kuffner LW - Princeton U (NCAA)
124th Overall: Lauri Pajuniemi RW - TPS (Liiga)
133rd Overall: Arttu Ruotsalainen C/LW - Ilves (Liiga)

Last Years Grade: B-
This Years Grade: B

Thomas has earned a slight bump this year over last season, again only drafting in the 3rd round onward. The Gleason pick was good value in the 3rd round and my favorite pick that Thomas made was his last. Ruotsalainen looks like a good bet to make the Sabres sometime soon after leading his team in scoring last season.

Kirklan Lycar - Colorado Avalanche:

68th Overall: Karson Kuhlman RW - Boston Bruins (NHL)

Last Years Grade: B+
This Years Grade: A+

Only one pick made, but he's an NHLer already. He probably won't get pro ratings out of the gate but with a full year in the NHL this year he shouldn't be far off. Great value pick here.

Dan Bacon - Dallas Stars:

111th Overall: Alex Beaucage RW - Rouyn-Noranda Huskies (QMJHL)
123rd Overall: Aliaksei Protas C - Prince Albert Raiders (WHL)

Last Years Grade: D (GM Bob McGugan)
This Years Grade: B

I'm really high on Beaucage and had Mr. Bacon with an A prior to him acquiring another pick. I don't see much offensive upside for Protas at the NHL level so he brings this draft grade down. Still much better draft than the previous GM!

Harald Geissler - Minnesota Wild:

27th Overall: Oliwer Kaski D - Lahden Pelicans (Liiga)
58th Overall: Anttoni Honka D - JYP Jyvaskyla (Liiga)

Last Years Grade: A
This Years Grade: B+

Harald hits another homerun with only 2 picks in the draft, and both are from Europe. Kaski led his team in scoring as a defenseman and will be exciting to watch in the Red Wings camp this year. Honka was very highly touted too and looked great against kids his own age. There is more risk involved with these two over last years I think, so he drops half a grade.

Eric Wolf - Nashville Predators:

29th Overall: Brayden Tracey LW - Moose Jaw Warriors (WHL)
60th Overall: Jesper Sellgren D - Lulea HC (SHL)
107th Overall: Dustin Wolf G - Everett Silvertips (WHL)
153rd Overall: Eric Hjorth D - Linkoping HC (SHL)

Last Years Grade: A
This Years Grade: A

Another A grade for Eric, great picks and no real reaches here. Hjorth will be joining Sarnia in the OHL and could be a late round gem. I'm not high on Dustin Wolf and feel his numbers are a product of good coaching...I hope you two aren't related and I just insulted your brother or something.

Shaun Stephens - St. Louis Blues:

12th Overall: Moritz Seider D - Adler Mannheim (DEL)
22nd Overall: Lassi Thomson D - Kelowna Rockets (WHL)
24th Overall: Taro Hirose LW - Michigan State U (NCAA)
39th Overall: Jamieson Rees C - Sarnia Sting (OHL)
50th Overall: Albin Grewe C/RW - Djurgardens IF (SHL)
136th Overall: Erik Portillo G - Forlunda HC (SHL)

Last Years Grade: B
This Years Grade: B+

Hirose was a bit of a reach at 24th, but he may have been gone by 39th so it maybe wasn't a huge reach. I really like the Thomson pick. Portillo will be coming to the USHL next year to show off his 6'6" frame. Rees is a real wildcard here, tons of skill but small.

Joe Tremblay - Winnipeg Jets:

13th Overall: Cole Caufield RW - USDP
43rd Overall: Pyotr Kochetkov G - HK Sochi (KHL)
44th Overall: Ryan Johnson D - Sioux Falls Stampede (USHL)
75th Overall: Vladislav Firstov LW - Waterloo Black Hawks (USHL)
78th Overall: Hunter Jones G - Peterborough Petes (OHL)
127th Overall: Zac Jones D - Tri-City Storm (USHL)
154th Overall: Marshall Warren D - USDP

Last Years Grade: B
This Years Grade: A

Fantastic draft haul for Joe, got a dynamic goal scorer early and filled the cupboards with players with high upsides. Who knows if the Russian goalie will make it over to North America, but I think Hunter Jones has just as high upside and was drafted a round later. Good value all around.

Wow, the Central division with some really good grades this year. Keep an eye out for the Pacific division article, I hope to have that completed tomorrow.

Kyle Phillips

This is one of the best things to come out every year.

Awesome work man! Yeah the Central is already the best division in the EHE. Just keeps getting better (we play and draft well too). :)
