Penguins beat Panthers 3-2 2018-12-06 PITTSBURGH - The Penguins are back in the win column. After two consecutive losses where they allowed a five spot in each game, the Penguins appear to be back on the right track, defeating the Florida Panthers by a score of 3-2 in overtime Wednesday night. In most situations, an overtime game almost always means that both teams played a relatively even match. However, the Penguins players had a different interpretation of their game last night. "We need to be better, flat out." said captain Jamie Benn. "I thought we did a good job at getting to their goalie early, but as the game went on I felt we weren't playing hard enough and I think our shots after the first period are evidence of that. We got a lot of good guys here so we feel that we should be able to make any goalie on any given night feel like we're gonna light them up." Brian Gibbons, who was moved up to the top line for tonight's game, had a similar message. "You know when you're in a spot like us where we have a lot of pressure to be a good team and work hard every night, you hate to see efforts like this, especially towards the end of the game. Enough can't be said about Gibson, you know he comes in and plays hard for us to give us a chance to win and we need to do the same for him." Alex Edler, who recorded his fourth goal in only his sixth game after only scoring eight all of last year, was modest when his stat line came up. "Yeah I mean it's nice to get another goal, I'll obviously help the team in any way I can, but at the end of the day we all just want to win games here. I thought we did a really good job killing penalties tonight, but we still can't be taking that many penalties, especially in the third period with the game tied. Team discipline is something we try to have tightened up on a nightly basis and tonight should have been no different." Coach Julien was much more complimentary of his team's game: "I thought we had a solid game tonight, Gibson came in for us and allowed Doobie to have a night off, I thought our defenseman played well in front of him which is always good to see. And you know enough can't be said about Jamie Benn, there's a reason he's our captain and best player and I thought his OT goal tonight was proof of that. We can always count on him when needed and he makes plays for us that seemingly come out of nowhere. I think too that we have one of the best scoring blue lines in the league and you saw that with Eds, Cam, and Ek all getting on the score sheet." Julien also liked what he saw from Gibbons, who he rewarded with more ice time after being a point per game player to start the season. "I thought he's come in as much more of a complete player, he's sharpened everything up with his game, offense, defense, you name it. He's been a solid player for us so far and he looks pretty comfortable with Bo and Jamie which is something we like to see." NEXT GAME: Penguins (4-1-1) try to extend their winning streak when they take on the slumping New York Rangers (1-3-2) in Game 84 on December 7th, 2018.
